THIS PAGE IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION
During the Sabbath (Shmittah) years our lectionary follows the annual cycle of Torah and Haftarah readings. During the other years the triennial cycle is followed. There are thus always two triennial cycles alternated by an annual cycle. 5772 is the beginning of a new triennial cycle, since the next Shmittah year is 5775. The traditional names of the Sabbaths, derived from the annual cycle, are retained in this calendar and lectionary
In order to not overburden the morning service (Shacharit) with readings, the lessons from the Apostolic Scriptures (traditionally divided into Epistle and Gospel) are placed in the evening service (Maariv). This naturally befits a liturgical model favouring the celebration of the Lord’s Supper in the evening services of Shabbat (Friday evening) and the major annual festivals (with the obvious exception of Yom Kippur).
In the Calendar as presented below we have related the New Moon or Rosh Chodesh days to the twelve Apostles. Yeshua is the spiritual centre or axis of the entire orbit of the liturgical year, and the division of the year in twelve months thus suggests a relation between the months and Yeshua’s Apostles. This relation can give a messianic flavour to the celebration of Rosh Chodesh.
We acknowledge, however, that any answer to the question how the Apostles are distinctly related to the months of the year is speculative and uncertain. For that reason the liturgical arrangement offered here for the celebration of the New Moon days as feasts or commemorations of the Apostles can only be hypothetical and provisional. It is based on respect for aspects of the Christian tradition and on practical calendrical considerations. In a separate article we hope to give more clarifications about this arrangement.
The general ideas underlying this lectionary can be found in our article: “Some Basic Contours of a Messianic Lectionary” .
